AutoCAD vs Revit – Which Should You Learn First in Sri Lanka?
Comparing AutoCAD and Revit for Sri Lankan students and professionals — which tool to pick first based on your career goal, industry demand, and salary outlook in 2026.

If you are starting a CAD or BIM career in Sri Lanka in 2026, the first big decision is which tool to learn: AutoCAD or Revit. Both come from Autodesk, both appear constantly on local construction and engineering job ads — and yet they solve very different problems. The right answer depends on the kind of work you actually want to do.
This guide compares them honestly so you can pick the path that matches your career, not the one that sounds the loudest on YouTube.
Who this guide is for
- School leavers or career-switchers choosing a first CAD course.
- Draftsmen who want to know whether to add Revit next.
- Design-track students deciding whether to skip straight to BIM.

Quick comparison
| Factor | AutoCAD | Revit |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A 2D / 3D drafting tool | A BIM authoring platform |
| Best for | Detail drawings, shop drawings, drafting jobs | Architecture, MEP, structural BIM, coordination |
| Learning curve | Gentle — useful drawings in weeks | Steeper — models, families, parameters, phases |
| File output | DWG (industry-standard 2D) | RVT plus IFC, NWC for coordination |
| Demand in Sri Lanka (2026) | Very high for draftsmen, contractors, MEP shops | Growing fast in design firms, consultants, BIM teams |
| Typical entry salary (LKR) | ~50,000 – 80,000 / month (AutoCAD draftsman) | ~70,000 – 120,000 / month (junior Revit / BIM modeller) |
When to pick AutoCAD first
Pick AutoCAD if at least one of these is true:
- You want to start working fast. AutoCAD jobs are abundant in Sri Lanka — drafting offices, contractors, MEP subcontractors, surveyors. You can become billable within 3 to 4 months.
- You are heading toward drafting, detailing, or quantity surveying. Steel detailers, civil draftsmen, MEP shop-drawing teams and QSs still measure productivity in DWGs per day.
- You are a student getting comfortable with 2D drawing conventions before stepping into 3D. AutoCAD teaches scale, layers, dimensioning and plotting — habits Revit assumes you already have.
- Your company already runs on DWG. Moving the whole firm to BIM is a multi-year change, not a single software swap.
Tip: even Revit-heavy teams expect juniors to read and edit DWGs on day one. AutoCAD literacy stays essential.
When to pick Revit first
Pick Revit if at least one of these is true:
- You want a design and BIM career — architecture, MEP design, structural design, BIM coordination. These roles in Sri Lanka often pay more than pure 2D drafting, and demand is growing.
- You aim to work for international clients (UAE, UK, Australia, Singapore). Many overseas projects are BIM-mandated and Revit-native.
- You like thinking parametrically — you would rather build a model once and let drawings, schedules and quantities update automatically than redraw every revision by hand.
- You want to grow into Navisworks, BIM 360, Civil 3D and clash detection. Revit is the natural on-ramp.
A pragmatic 2026 roadmap
Here is the path many successful students follow:
- Month 1–3 — AutoCAD fundamentals: plans, sections, details, layouts, plotting, blocks.
- Month 4–6 — Revit (Architecture, MEP, or Structural depending on your target): modelling, families, sheets, schedules.
- Month 7+ — Add one specialisation: Revit MEP, BIM coordination with Navisworks, quantity surveying with Bluebeam / PlanSwift, or 3D visualisation with 3ds Max + V-Ray.
This gives you AutoCAD income while you are still learning, and a clear BIM ramp when you are ready to specialise.
How CAD Academy structures the journey
At ArchiTech CAD Academy, courses are stacked so you do not waste time:
| Course | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Engineering Draftsmanship with AutoCAD | Fastest path to your first job. |
| Diploma in BIM with Revit Architecture (Sri Lanka) | Most popular local Revit programme. |
| Diploma in BIM with Revit MEP | MEP specialisation — demand often exceeds supply. |
| Diploma in AEC Project Review with Navisworks and BIM Collaboration Pro | Next step once you are confident in Revit. |
All are TVEC-accredited and taught by Autodesk-certified instructors who work on Sri Lankan and overseas projects.
Frequently asked questions
Is AutoCAD outdated in 2026?
No. AutoCAD is still the default for shop drawings, civil drafting, surveying and many Sri Lankan contractors. It is not the future of design alone, but it is very much the present of production.
Can I skip AutoCAD and go straight to Revit?
You can — and many design-track students do. You will still hit DWG-based collaboration on real projects and need at least basic AutoCAD. Plan to pick it up later if you skip it now.
Which has a better salary in Sri Lanka?
Revit / BIM roles pay more on average and can scale further, especially if you support international projects remotely. AutoCAD-only roles can top out earlier unless you add specialist skills.
How long until I am job-ready?
Roughly 3 months of focused AutoCAD study or 4–6 months of Revit with a portfolio project. Daily practice matters more than course length alone.
